Now preparing for his fifth America's Cup campaign, Australian Peter Gilmour will lead the Seattle-based OneWorld Challenge for the Cup in 2003. "Gillie" made his debut as starting helmsman for the Australian defense in 1987 when the Cup was sailed off Fremantle, Australia, which is his home. He was most recently the skipper of Japan's Nippon Challenge during the last Cup in Auckland. A two-time winner of the Gold Cup, the 40-year-old Gilmour was also winner of the World Match Racing Championship three times over the last ten years.
Gilmour started sailing at the age of seven on Perth's Swan River, Australia, and contested his first world championship at the age of sixteen, finishing in 21st place. Gilmour's performance continued to improve, and his experience with the different disciplines of sailing increased. Gilmour has sailed in everything from dinghies to offshore yachts, having competed in both the Sydney to Hobart and Fastnet races, but has settled on match racing as his chosen field.
